When summer settles over the Stormberg mountains, a remarkable transformation takes place across the grasslands. Rising above the veld, crowned with fiery blooms, the Candelabra Lily announces the season with unmistakable presence.
Known botanically as Brunsvigia Josephinae, this striking indigenous plant is one of South Africa’s most dramatic flowering bulbs. Its tall, sturdy stem supports a spherical cluster of trumpet-shaped flowers, often in brilliant shades of red, scarlet, or deep pink; resembling a many-armed candelabra reaching toward the sky.
A Flower That Follows the Rain
The Candelabra Lily typically blooms in late summer, often after good rains. What makes it even more extraordinary is that it flowers before its leaves appear. The thick flower stalk emerges from dry ground, almost as if by magic, standing proudly above the surrounding grasses.
Later, once the flowering display has faded, broad grey-green leaves emerge and lie flat against the ground. These nourish the underground bulb through winter, storing energy for the next dramatic performance.
Built for the Grasslands
Native to parts of the Eastern Cape and Free State, including regions surrounding the Stormberg, Brunsvigia Josephinae is well adapted to open grassland environments. Its large bulb sits partially exposed above the soil, a characteristic feature of the species.
The plant’s life cycle is closely tied to fire and rainfall patterns. In natural grasslands, seasonal fires clear competing vegetation, creating ideal conditions for bulbs like the Candelabra Lily to thrive.
A Moment to Look For
Guests visiting Leliekloof Lodge in late summer may be fortunate enough to encounter these blooms scattered across the veld. They are not massed like wildflower carpets; instead, they appear as bold, solitary statements; each plant commanding attention in its own space.
Their flowering season is brief, making the sighting feel even more special. Like much in nature here, timing is everything.
The Candelabra Lily A Reminder of the Landscape’s Rhythm
The Candelabra Lily is more than a beautiful flower, it is a reminder of the quiet rhythms that shape this landscape. Rain, sun, fire, and time work together to produce moments of brilliance.
When you walk the mountain trails and notice a sudden burst of red rising from the grass, you are witnessing one of the Stormberg’s most iconic seasonal displays.
